According to Catholic tradition, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous man, just north of Mexico City on December 12, 1531. The event became a pivotal one in the conversion of Mesoamerican indigenous peoples to Christianity as the legendary apparition spread rapidly. Within a few years, millions of indigenous peoples who had resisted conversion were voluntarily baptized. Today, The Virgin of Guadalupe, matron saint of Mexico, is also the focus of devoted worship outside Mexican borders. In Guatemala, it has become an annual tradition to dress children as Juan Diego and take them to Guatemala’s own Church of our Lady of Guadalupe in the heart of the capital city.
